Dr. Masayuki Saijo

Dr. Masayuki Saijo is a Medical Doctor, and has received his Ph.D. degree in pediatrics under the directorship by Professor Yoshioka H. and Professor Okuno A., Asahikawa Medical University, in Japan in 1991. His primary field is viral infections. He has studied clinical infectious diseases such as Respiratory Synticial Virus infections in children and antiviral-resistant herpesvirus infections in immunocompromised subjects. He has been interested in the infectious diseases associated with organ transplantation. He also studied the viral infections such as acute respiratory infections and polio in children, and viral hemorrhagic fevers in tropical regions such as Zambia, Ghana, and Nigeria in Africa since 1995 . He has joined the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), Tokyo, Japan, in 1997, and has studied viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola, Marburg, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fevers. His research team is leading in the field of diagnostics and clinical aspects of emerging virus infections including viral hemorrhagic fevers. He has head the Neurovirology Laboratory in the Department of Virology 1, NIID, since 2007.
