Olivera J. Finn, Ph.D.

Dr. Finn is Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Immunology Program Leader. Dr. Finn received her PhD from Stanford University and has been working in the area of tumor immunology for over 25 years. Her laboratory was one of the first to study human T cell responses against tumors, and one of the first to identify a human tumor antigen, MUC1, capable of stimulating cytotoxic T cells. Her work led to the identification of a unique peptide epitope on that molecule culminating in 1993 in the designation of the synthetic version of this epitope as an investigational new drug by the FDA to be tested as a vaccine for breast, prostate, lung, pancreas and other human adenocarcinomas. Similar basic and translational projects have been more recently carried out by her laboratory related to another antigen for the same cancers, cyclin B1. After several trials in the therapeutic setting, Dr. Fin is currently testing cancer vaccines in the prophylactic setting. Dr. Finn has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and numerous reviews and book chapters on the topic of tumor immunity. She serves on many editorial boards as well as advisory boards. She is Past President of the American Association of Immunologists and Councilor of the International Union of Immunology Societies.
