Shan Lu, Ph.D.

Shan LuDr. Shan Lu received his medical degree from Nanjing Medical College, China, PhD in immunology from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical Sciences and Master of Health Administration from Clark University, USA. He was a previous recipient of SmithKline Beecham Research Award, Healey Endowment Research Award for Biomedical Research, Worcester Foundation for Biomedical Research Award and CVIP Technology Development Award. He also received Howard Hughes Research Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. He completed his residency training at UMass Hospital in Internal Medicine and is a licensed physician and board certified internist in the US.

Dr. Lu is a leader in novel vaccine development against a wide range of human pathogens. He has over 120 publications in international scientific journals.  He has designed and conducted world’s first DNA prime-protein boost AIDS vaccine study in humans which showed cross-reactive neutralizing antibody responses in volunteers – a major progress in AIDS vaccine development.  His research group has received research funding from the US National Institutes of Health and the Gates Foundation to develop vaccines against emerging infectious diseases and biodefense targets. He is a member of the Executive Board of the International Society for Vaccines (ISV) and one of its three executive officers. He also holds adjunct professorship at multiple Chinese higher education and research institutions. He is an Executive Board member of China AIDS Vaccine Initiative (CAVI) under China’s Ministry of Health. He is an editorial board member for several leading scientific journals including Vaccine. He has served as a co-Chair for the 2nd to 5th Vaccine and ISV Annual Global Vaccine Congresses.
