José Esparza MD, Ph.D., Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle, USA
José Esparza is the Senior Adviser, Vaccines, at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in Seattle, USA. For over 25 years he focused on HIV Vaccines, first at WHO/UNAIDS in Geneva (1986-2004) and then at the Gates Foundation (2004-2011). Was trained as an MD (Venezuela, 1968) and PhD (Baylor College of Medicine, 1974). From 1974 to 1985 worked at the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC) in Caracas, Venezuela, where he became Professor of Virology and Chairman of the Center of Microbiology and Cell Biology. From 1980 to 1982 was a Visiting Professor at Duke. Has authored over 160 scientific articles, is member of several editorial boards, and of a number of international scientific advisory committees.
